Fire Extinguisher Types & Classes

It is important to use the appropriate extinguisher for the type of substance that is burning (wood, oil, electrics, etc.) as shown by the classification below. First of all you need to understand the different classes of fires.

"Class A– a fire involving solid materials, usually of an organic nature, in which combustion normally takes place with the formation of glowing embers. Combustible materials include paper, wood, cardboard and most plastics. "

"Class B– a fire that involve flammable or combustible liquids such as petrol, kerosene, grease and oil."

"Class C– a fire involving electrical equipment such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets, or a class A, B or D fire occurring in the presence of energized electrical equipment. VERY IMPORTANT!! Never use water to extinguish class C fires!"

"Class D– a fire involving chemicals and combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium."

"Class F– fires that involve cooking oils, trans-fats or fats in cooking appliances that are typically found in restaurants."

Different extinguishing mediums are available for specific classes of fire which necessitates the assessment of the type of hazard in the particular area you are protecting in order to maximize the effectiveness of the extinguisher you are going to have available in a fire emergency.

POWDER FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Dry powder extinguishers smother fires by forming a barrier between the fuel and source of oxygen. The label color for this type of extinguisher is yellow. Wet chemical extinguishers can also be used for fires caused by various organic materials including wood, coal, textiles, fabrics, cardboard and paper.

FOAM FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Foam extinguishers. Foam fire extinguishers can be used on Class A and B fires. They are most suited to extinguishing liquid fires such as petrol or diesel and are more versatile than water jet extinguishers because they can also be used on solids such as wood and paper.

WATER FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

There are four different types of water extinguishers: water jet, water spray, water with additives and water mist or fog. Water jet extinguishers work by spraying a jet of water at the burning materials, cooling them and preventing re-ignition. They should not be used on live electrical equipment.

WET CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Wet chemical fire extinguishers are usually supplied with a long lance which helps to safely deploy the foam. The wet chemical forms a thick soapy foam-like blanket over the surface of the burning oil/fat which stops oxygen from reaching the fire and smothers the flames.

WATER MIST FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

The water droplets are so fine that they do not descend below the burning hot liquids and prevent an explosion, like a ordinary water extinguisher would. Water mist extinguishers can be used on wood fires, petrol fires, gas fires, electrical fires and cooking oil fires.

CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

A Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Extinguisher is typically used for Class B (flammable liquids and gases) and Class C (energised electrical) fires. Carbon dioxide extinguishers are filled with non-flammable carbon dioxide gas. The CO2 fire extinguisher can be easily identified by its hard horn and lack of pressure gauge.

VEHICLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

It is important that you carry the best car fire extinguisher in your car at all times, as you never know when you might need it. Car fire extinguishers have the same capacity as normal fire extinguishers, with the only difference being that they are more compact so they don’t take up vital space.

FIRE BLANKETS

Fire blankets are a top priority when it comes to fire safety. They are easy to store and use as your first line of defense against nascent fires. It is important to consider the various fire blanket materials available in the market. With so many options, it can be quite confusing to make the right pick. To make the process easier.

AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Automatic fire extinguishers are designed to operate automatically when the a trigger threshold is met. The main trigger of this extinguisher is heat levels commonly associated with fire. They are majorly installed in unsupervised areas.

FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

Any commercial building requires fire protection. For most commercial applications, a fire sprinkler system is the fire protection option that works best to protect your property and your people from a potential fire hazard.

We also supply fire hose reels. Our hose reels are suitable for industrial applications and have been designed and manufactured according to the highest SABS standards, ensuring optimal performance, quality and reliability.

Fire hose reels are used to fight Class A fires ( wood, paper, cloth etc.), and their function is to supply a continuous and controllable supply of water to a fire. Under no circumstances, you should use a fire hose around oils, petrol, fats or electricity as you risk spreading the fire or getting shocked.

Car fire extinguishers have the same capacity as normal fire extinguishers, with the only difference being that they are more compact so they don’t take up vital space.

Cars are not the only place where you should carry an extinguisher. You should also keep one handy in your van, truck, camper, caravan, and even in your rally car. Petrol heads should be sure to have the correct type of fire extinguisher accessible when taking part in any type of motorsport.

A small powder fire extinguisher is all that’s required for most car fires – 1 kg or 2 kg size extinguishers (or less) are adequate and extremely affordable. And sometimes, they’re supplied with a mounting bracket which prevents it from rolling around and getting damaged.

Larger cars and vans should carry a 2kg powder fire extinguisher. But please note that there are specific regulations for the provision of fire extinguishers in trucks and lorries. Storage solutions include vehicle fire extinguisher brackets and fire extinguisher boxes.

Fire Alarm systems

A fire detection system (sometimes called a fire alarm system) is a system of integrated fire detection devices controlled from a central control panel. Whilst smoke and heat detectors are effective at alerting people in the immediate vicinity of where the smoke is detected. Only a fire detection system will alert people throughout your entire building, giving them enough time to get to safety. The system can also be setup to summon emergency services and broadcast emergency evacuation messages.

Installing a fire alarm is essential to ensure your safety and that of those around you. The installation of this system is governed by the South Africa Law. All owners, occupants, are concerned by the implementation of an alarm mechanism with an autonomous smoke detector.

Regarding the price of installing a fire alarm, it varies according to the prices of the equipment (fire extinguisher, smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, etc.) chosen by the owner. The cost of installing a fire alarm depends on different types in Gauteng.

Please be aware that in accordance with South African regulation SANS 10139:2012 your fire detection system must be serviced every 6 months. This is a compulsory; legal requirement and the service must be recorded in a log book and signed off by a certified fire technician. Failure to comply leaves the owner liable for prosecution in the event of a fire. It can also result in your insurance company refusing to settle any claim.
